How much does it cost to install an EV charger?
It is priced per job, after the supply check. The cable run from your consumer unit to the parking is normally the biggest variable, followed by the state of your existing board. Anyone quoting a single figure before seeing those two things is guessing, and the guess gets corrected on the invoice.
Is there a grant for a home EV charger?
Not if you own a house with off-street parking. That group was removed from the scheme years ago. Grants of up to £500 per socket are available to renters, flat owners, landlords, workplaces, and households that have only on-street parking.
How much is the EV chargepoint grant?
Up to £500 per socket for most schemes, which rose from £350 on 1 April 2026. State-funded education institutions can claim up to £2,000 per socket. The schemes are currently funded to 31 March 2027.
Is it cheaper to charge at home than at a public charger?
Considerably, and it is the main reason people have one fitted. A home charger runs on your domestic electricity rate, and on an EV tariff the overnight window is cheaper again. Public rapid charging costs several times more per unit.
Does an EV charger add value to a house?
Estate agents generally report it as a selling point, though not a measurable uplift. What it definitely does is remove an objection from a buyer who already drives an EV.
What it is all called
The same object has six names. Here is which is which.
What is the difference between a charge point, a chargepoint and a charging station?
Nothing. Chargepoint and charge point are the industry terms, charging point is the everyday one, and charging station usually means the same box on a wall, though it sometimes refers to a whole public site with several bays. An EV charger is the same thing again.
Is a charging port the same as a charge point?
No, and it is a common mix-up. The charging port is the socket on the car. The charge point is the unit on your wall. The cable connects the two.
What is a Level 2 charger in UK terms?
Level 2 is American terminology for AC charging above household socket speed. The UK equivalent is a standard 7kW home charge point. Level 1 is a three-pin plug, and Level 3 is what we call rapid DC charging.
Do I need an electrician or a specialist EV installer?
An electrician, and specifically one competent in EV charging installation and registered with a competent person scheme so the work can be certified. For grant-funded work they also need OZEV authorisation, which is separate again.
What is the difference between an EV charger fitter and an installer?
Nothing, they are the same trade. Fitter, installer, installation company and charging contractor all describe someone who installs charge points. What matters is the registration behind the name, not the name.
Charging costs and running it
Why home charging is the cheap option, and where it is not.
Is it cheaper to charge at home or at a public charger?
Home is substantially cheaper, and on an overnight EV tariff it is dramatically cheaper. Public rapid charging carries the cost of the hardware, the grid connection, the site rent and VAT at the standard rate. Home electricity carries VAT at 5%.
How do I work out what a home charge costs?
Multiply the energy you put in by your unit rate. A 60kWh battery filled from 20% to 80% takes about 36kWh, so at 8p per kWh on an overnight EV tariff that is a few pounds, and at a standard daytime rate it is several times more. Your own rate is on your bill.
What is the downside of charging at home?
You need somewhere off the public highway to park, and the charge is slower than a motorway rapid. Neither matters much when the car is stationary overnight, which is why home charging suits daily driving and public rapids suit long journeys.
Do I need a special tariff to make it worthwhile?
No, but it is where most of the saving is. Time-of-use EV tariffs price a night-time window far below the day rate, and a charger that schedules into that window automatically means you get it without thinking about it.
Will a home charger increase my electricity bill?
Yes, and it should still cost you less overall, because the increase replaces petrol or diesel spending rather than adding to it. Whether it works out depends on your mileage and your tariff.
The installation
What actually happens, and how long it takes.
How long does it take to install an EV charger?
A straightforward domestic installation is a single day. Longer cable runs, buried ducts, a consumer unit replacement or anything needing the network operator will take longer, and you should be told which of those applies before you commit.
Do I need planning permission for an EV charger?
Normally no. A wall-mounted chargepoint at a house is usually permitted development. It is different if the property is listed, if it sits in a conservation area, or if the unit would face a highway on a front elevation.
Does an EV charger installation need to be certified?
Yes. The work is carried out to BS 7671 and notified under Part P of the Building Regulations, and you should receive an electrical installation certificate with the test results for the new circuit.
Where should the charger be mounted?
As close as practical to where the car actually parks, and on a wall that keeps the cable off a public route. Height matters more than people expect: too low and the lead drags, too high and it is awkward to plug in.
Can the cable be buried?
Yes, in armoured cable at the correct depth with marker tape. It costs more than clipping along a wall and it looks far better, which is usually the right trade where the charger sits on a detached garage.
Will installing a charger make a mess?
There is drilling, and there is a cable route. Both are agreed with you before anything starts, and the route is kept off the front elevation wherever an alternative exists.
Do I need permission to install an EV charger at home?
You need your Distribution Network Operator notified or, for larger loads, asked in advance. Your installer handles that. If you rent, you also need written permission from the landlord, and if you own a flat you need the freeholder or managing agent. That consent is the slowest part of most jobs, so start it early.
How long will it be before my charger is installed?
Once the survey is approved and the unit is ordered, most installations are booked within a few weeks. The two things that stretch it are unit availability and the network operator where a supply change is needed. Lead times to be confirmed.
How long does the installation itself take?
A straightforward domestic job is two to four hours on site. Long cable runs, buried ducts or a consumer unit change make it a full day.
Where is the best place to put an EV charger?
On a wall as close as possible to where the car parks, positioned so the cable reaches the car's charging port without stretching across a walkway. Roughly waist height suits most people. The shorter the run from the consumer unit, the cheaper the job.
How do I prepare for an EV charger installation?
Clear access to the consumer unit and to the wall where the unit goes, decide where the car will park, and have the parking free on the day. If you have bought your own unit, have it on site with its instructions.
Can I supply my own charger?
Yes. Plenty of people buy the unit themselves, and the quote then covers the installation only. Tell us at the enquiry stage, because it changes what is priced. If you would rather it was all one price, that works too.
Can I install an EV charger myself?
No. It is a new circuit in a dwelling, which is notifiable work under Part P, and it must be carried out by a competent person and certified. A DIY installation is unsafe, uninsurable and unlawful.
Your supply and electrics
The part that decides whether the job is simple or not.
Can my house take an EV charger?
Almost certainly. Three things decide it: the rating of your main fuse, the spare capacity in your consumer unit, and your earthing arrangement. All three are checked before the work is quoted.
Do I need my fuse box upgraded for an EV charger?
Sometimes. A charger needs its own way in the board with the right protective device, so an old board with no spare capacity or no RCD protection may need replacing. That should be priced in the quote, not discovered on the day.
What is load curtailment, and do I need it?
Load curtailment lets the charger reduce its draw when the rest of the house needs the capacity. On a 60A main fuse with an electric shower it is the difference between charging safely and tripping the supply, so it is fitted wherever the margin is tight.
Do I need to tell my electricity supplier?
The network operator, not the supplier, and your installer handles it. Most domestic 7kW installations are notified after the event. Larger loads need an application before the work.
Can I have an EV charger with a TT earthing system?
Yes, though the arrangement differs. Older rural properties in particular need the earthing checked carefully, because the protective measures for an outdoor chargepoint depend on it. This is exactly what the survey is for.
Do I need three-phase for a home charger?
No. Almost no British home has three phases and none needs them for a 7kW charger. Three-phase only matters if you want 11kW or 22kW, and even then only if the car can accept it.
Choosing a charger
Every unit charges at the same speed. Here is what actually differs.
Which EV charger is best?
There is no single best unit, because on a single-phase supply they all deliver 7kW. Solar panels point towards a Zappi or a Hypervolt, a smart tariff towards an Ohme, two cars towards load-balancing units like Easee, and a tight wall towards a compact unit like the Wallbox Pulsar Plus.
How fast does a 7kW charger charge?
About 25 miles of range an hour. A 60kWh battery goes from nearly empty to full overnight, which is all that matters when the car is parked for eight hours anyway.
Is a 22kW charger worth it at home?
No. It requires a three-phase supply that domestic properties do not have, and a car whose onboard charger can use it, which most cannot. On a normal house supply it charges at exactly the same rate as a 7kW unit.
Should I get tethered or untethered?
Tethered has the lead attached, so plugging in is one-handed and nothing lives in the boot. Untethered takes your own cable, keeps the unit smaller on the wall and adapts if you change cars. Most people who park the same way daily prefer tethered.
Do all EV chargers work with all cars?
Effectively yes. Every modern EV sold in the UK uses a Type 2 connector, and that includes Teslas, so a Tesla Wall Connector charges a Kia perfectly well and vice versa.
Do I need a smart charger?
Yes, and you will get one. Regulations require new home chargepoints sold in Great Britain to have smart functionality. What varies between brands is how well that works with your particular tariff.
Can an EV charger use my solar panels?
Some units can. Zappi and Hypervolt match the charge rate to whatever the panels are exporting, so the car takes generation you would otherwise sell back cheaply. Units without solar diversion simply draw at full rate.
Living with it
Questions that come up after the installation, not before.
Can I charge an electric car from a three-pin plug?
It works and it is slow, roughly 2.3kW, which is about 8 miles of range an hour. A socket circuit is not designed to run at close to its limit for ten hours at a stretch, which is why a dedicated circuit exists.
Is it safe to charge an EV in the rain?
Yes. Chargepoints are designed for outdoor use and the connector does not become live until the car and the unit have completed a handshake. Plugging in during a downpour is fine.
Should I charge to 100% every night?
Generally no. Most manufacturers suggest 80% for daily use and 100% before a long trip, which is why almost every charger and car app lets you set a limit. Check your own handbook, because lithium iron phosphate batteries are an exception and often prefer a full charge.
Can I use an extension lead for EV charging?
No. Domestic extension leads are not rated for a sustained charging load and are a fire risk. This is one of the few absolute rules in the subject.
What happens in a power cut?
The charger stops and resumes when supply returns. Scheduled charging picks up on its next window, and no damage is done to the car or the unit.
Business and workplace
For sites, fleets and anyone with more than one bay to think about.
How many EV charging bays can our site have?
That comes out of a load assessment, which measures your existing peak demand instead of assuming it. Load management then shares the available capacity across bays, so the limit is usually total demand and not the number of sockets.
Does a business need three-phase for EV charging?
Not necessarily. Three-phase makes 11kW and 22kW units worthwhile, but where vehicles are parked all day a bank of 7kW bays under load management delivers more useful charging than a couple of fast ones people queue for.
Can we charge staff or customers for using our chargers?
Yes. Units with a back-office platform meter each session and bill by RFID card or app, with reporting per user or department.
What grant can a business get for EV chargers?
The Workplace Charging Scheme covers up to 75% of purchase and installation costs, capped at £500 per socket for up to 40 sockets. The voucher must be issued before the installation, not claimed afterwards.
How should a van fleet be charged?
Around dwell time, not charging speed. Vehicles parked from evening to morning are best served by more, slower bays scheduled into off-peak hours, so every van is ready for first-out without the site setting a new peak demand.
Do commercial chargers need periodic inspection?
Yes, and most sites want the report on record. The interval depends on the installation and its use, and it is set at commissioning.
Faults and repairs
When a charger that used to work stops working.
Why does my EV charger keep tripping?
Usually one of three causes: a earth fault in the circuit or the vehicle, moisture in the unit or connector, or a protective device nuisance-tripping because of how the circuit was originally arranged. Testing separates them, and no unit should be replaced before that is done.
Why is my charger showing as offline?
Almost always connectivity, not the charger itself. Wi-Fi signal at the point the unit is mounted is the common culprit, followed by firmware that has fallen behind. The unit generally keeps charging while offline.
Will you repair a charger someone else installed?
Yes, whatever the brand. If the original installation is unsafe or does not meet current regulations, that correction is priced separately from the fault so you can see which is which.
My charger is dead. Repair or replace?
Diagnosis first. It may be the unit, its supply or the circuit protection, and the three cost very different amounts to put right. Replacement is sometimes the honest answer, but not before testing says so.

Can I have a charger in a terraced house with no driveway?
Only if there is somewhere off the public highway to park, such as a rear yard or a hardstanding. A lead run across a pavement is a trip hazard and not something any reputable installer will fit. The cross-pavement grant scheme funds a proper gully where the local authority permits one.
Can I install a charger on a listed building or in a conservation area?
Often, with care over siting and sometimes with consent. Around Bakewell, old Dronfield and parts of Buxton this is a real constraint, and it is worth resolving before you buy a vehicle on the assumption it can be charged at home.
Does living in the Peak District change the installation?
It changes the siting more than the electrics. Valley-side plots put parking above or below the property, exposure at altitude affects where a unit goes and how the cable entry is sealed, and conservation areas limit what can face the street.
Do you charge extra to travel out to the High Peak?
Travel is factored into the quote and stated upfront. Buxton is around 24 miles from Chesterfield and Glossop around 35 over the Snake Pass, which matters more for an urgent fault call-out than for a planned installation.
