The breakdown

What an EV charger installation price includes

The charger unit

£450 to £900

Varies by brand and whether it has solar diversion, tariff control or a tethered lead.

Installation labour

£200 to £500

A straightforward job on a short cable run sits at the bottom of that. Long runs and buried ducts sit at the top.

Typical total, fitted

£800 to £1,200

What most standard 7kW domestic installations come to across the UK, unit and labour together.

What moves the price

Why EV charger installation costs vary by house

The unit is the fixed part. What varies is how far the cable travels and what it has to get past on the way, which is why a quote given without seeing your board and your parking is a guess.

  • A consumer unit with no spare capacity or no suitable protection needs work before the charger circuit can go in.
  • Cable runs beyond about fifteen metres, and anything that has to be buried or ducted across a drive.
  • Older earthing arrangements that need additional protective measures.
  • Groundworks and reinstatement where the parking is away from the house.

Grants

What an EV charger grant takes off the price

Up to £500 per socket, for renters, flat owners, landlords, workplaces and households with only on-street parking. If you own a house with a driveway there is no grant, which is the thing most people get wrong.

What EV charging costs once it is fitted

The installation is a one-off. The running cost repeats every week, and on an overnight EV tariff it is a fraction of public rapid charging. The charging cost calculator works it out on your own tariff and mileage.

Questions

Questions about EV charger costs

How much does it cost to install an EV charger at home?

Between £800 and £1,200 fitted for a standard 7kW installation across the UK, made up of roughly £450 to £900 for the unit and £200 to £500 for the work. Your own figure depends on the cable run and the state of your consumer unit.

Why do EV charger quotes vary so much?

Because the hardware is the fixed part and the installation is not. A charger going on a garage wall two metres from the consumer unit is a different job from one on a detached garage at the bottom of a garden, and only a survey tells the two apart.

Is the charger included in the installation price?

Usually, though you can buy the unit yourself and pay for the installation only. Say which you want at enquiry stage, because it changes what is quoted.

Does a grant reduce the cost?

For some people. Grants of up to £500 per socket go to renters, flat owners, landlords, workplaces and households with only on-street parking. If you own a house with a driveway there is no grant, which catches most people out.

What is the cheapest way to get an EV charger installed?

Keep the cable run short and choose a unit that matches what you actually have. Paying for solar diversion without solar panels, or a 22kW unit on a single-phase supply, is where most money gets wasted.

Are there any hidden costs?

There should not be. Everything that might be needed is visible at survey: the board, the earthing, the run and the main fuse. Surprises come from quotes given without looking at those.
